Phone Museum

Ever wondered what early mobile phones used to look like? Did you always want to take a photo in the famous red telephone booth? Now you can do all that and more at the GoMobile phone museum happening at the GoMobile Expo, 12-14 November 2010, KL Convention Centre.

The phone museum will tell the story of mobile phone communications in Malaysia.

Plans for the phone museum started earlier this year when Mobile World magazine issued a call for readers to lend us (or even contribute) their old phones for the phone museum. The idea was to show the current generation where it all started. Those who had phones during those times would also be able to indulge in some nostalgia.

Everything has gone well. Readers from as far away as Sarawak have pitched in to lend their devices. We have built up a nice collection of old phones. To add icing to the cake, Muzium Telekom Malaysia is joining us in enhancing the museum by lending us some of their collection.

Visitors will be able to see a Morse code machine, old rotary dial telephones, ATUR phones and mobile phones from the eighties onwards. There’ll even be a replica of a London phone booth for visitors to snap photos in.

The GoMobile Phone Museum is presented by Open University Malaysia (OUM). Make sure you visit it at the GoMobile Expo.

GoMobile Needs Your Old Phones

alt
One of the key aims of GoMobile is to educate Malaysian consumers on the achievements and progress of the communications industry. In line with that, we plan this year to put up a special Phone Museum display at the GoMobile Expo.

This display will show iconic phones and mobile technologies from the very start of the mobile industry to this very day. Among the phones we are seeking are those old gigantic car phones (that looks like briefcases, the Tai-Ko-Tai phones that is interesting  and popular back then. Long gone phone brands would be great too. And even old itself is relative; we would love to get some of the first camera phones, smart phones and even PDAs, etc..

Another encouraging highlight was the showcases of mobile content and applications that we believe will become increasingly important in the years to come.
